Summary
The old adobe houses of northern New Mexico have not received the recognition they deserve. Overshadowed by the more visible but less authentic Santa Fe style architecture, these houses represent a unique combination of seventeenth-century adobe-building traditions with various features of nineteenth-century American architecture brought west by settlers anxious to have something to remind them of home. A rich and caried regional style developed over a period of about 100 years, and today hundreds of these homemade adobe houses still stand in the small communities of northern New Mexico. The author traces the evolution of this style from its Spanish Colonial origins to its mid-twentieth-century demise, and illustrates it abundantly with photographs, floor plans, and drawings. Other books on New Mexico architecture have focused on historic Spanish Colonial architecture and on later "establishment" styles rather than on the vernacular architecture of rural Hispanic houses. The author has documented a true indigenous style, and as many of the remaining houses fall into disrepair, her thorough documentation has come none too soon. Architects, historic preservationists, and anyone interested in the history of American architecture will find this book a valuable and long overdue contribution to the literature of the region
