- Summary
- Robert Harding, drafted out of college into the Viet Nam war, is shot in the back by a fellow Marine--a comrade in arms--a man he would never have met, although they are from the same city, outside a war each hates (but for very different reasons). Separated for a time from his buddies--Green, the black man who believes in the ethic of professionalism even in war, and the young, innocent ex-high school quarterback from Texas, "Audie Murphy-Harding, still suffering from his physical and emotional wounds, seeks them out again only to find himself face to face with some of the darkest elements in the American character. Comrades in Arms deals sensitively and at times frighteningly with the wedding of violence and innocence, the fostering of evil in those who cannot discern the process, and the guilt of those who see but are unable to act. Building quietly to its terrifying climax, it is a moving lament for an ill-used generation whose shattered values, though reconstructed, may never again be whole.--Jacket
