Summary
Adventure-loving Ross Gordon rode out of Illinois onto the Texas plains with a burning but fading hope of becoming a cowboy. The Double Bee ranch-hands snickered at his Yankee rig, laughed at his violin and roared at his sorrel mare Dixie. He swallowed the joshing at himself but when they poked fun at his horse, they were going too far. It took some doings to change their tune. After he captured a rustler, saved his pal, Jerry Boyd, from Indian raiders and outwitted them to escape himself, the cowpokes reckoned maybe Ross Gordon would come up to mustard, so they took him on the long trail to Dodge City, Kansas. He braves storms and flooded streams, an Indian attack and a prairie fire, outlaws, stampedes and a river mill - even an encounter with two of the most dastardly bandits in history, Jesse and Frank James. He raced Dixie against the fastest horses of the cattle country, hunter buffalo, had a lot of fun and suffered pain, too. When they called him Cowboy at the end of the cattle drive, the Double Bee cowpokes meant it. Here is an excellent story salted with the talk and color of the West in the middle 1870s, peppered with excitement and spiced with big scenes of adventure - a rich literary dish for the reader who wants his fiction crisp, moving and credible. Its historical background gives an accurate picture of the Old West when the six-gun made all men equal and the branding iron was the rancher's dollar mark -- Book jacket
