Summary
"While the Deep South writhed in the grip of the Reconstruction and the Southwest bled under Apache tomahawk, the tortured country of granite and sand lying along the Llano River of Texas saw the last Comanche warriors driven away to the reservations. Then came a tide of sturdy people, men and women who arrived to escape tyranny from whence they came. They brought with them neither prejudice against race or creed, nor did they know the ordinary meaning of fear. They lived courageously, generously, and humanely. That scourge of many other frontiers, the gunman with the lightning draw, soon left for reasons of personal health. These people condoned no wrong; they believed in the right of people to live their own lives. Yet, despite all their virtues, they were human beings with human shortcomings. This is the story of those Llano neighbors."--Introduction (vii)
