Summary
No writer in the U.S.A. can combine folklore and humanitarianism better than can Martha Emmons. In 1975 in Commerce she said this "Often there is wisdom in ghost tales by Negroes, and in their theories concerning ghosts." Then she gave examples just as she has done in her book I COME RUNNIN. In our day much is said, written, and sung concerning conservation of natural resources. Just as vital a resource as any proclaimed by ecologists (and surely as well worth preserving) are natural human cultures: the sayings, the songs, the play and the work--the mores generally--of any people, especially the untutored. Such groups make no written or painted or sculptured records. Hence, Miss Emmmons makes a valuable and entertaining record for us. This book will enrich your vocabulary as it enriches your life. Because of the growing scarcity of sources for such a work, and because of what she sees in the sands of her own hourglass, she realizes that is she brings even a little of that she so wishes to preserve, she must, indeed, "Come Runnin."
