- Summary
- "A bittersweet period of middle-class, urban America is recalled in these photographs taken between 1935 and 1941. This was a time of desperation, introspection, innocence, decorum. The style of life-everyday life-has been candidly and graphically recorded. People, homes, buildings, shops, streets, signs, meet{u00AD} ing places, backyards, sideshows, advertisements, objects on a radio, all attempt to give perspective to this critical era. The work is compassionate, sometimes passionate. For the first time a group of photographers, on government assignment, was able to work with small cameras that revolutionized the documentary photograph. For the first time they were able to record what they really saw and what they really felt conveyed the essence of urban America in the depths of depression, on the brink of war"--Jacket flap
