Summary
Machu Picchu is an important Inca sanctuary that sits at 8000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains. The Inca King Pachacuti commissioned its building around 1432. In 1538, the Spanish Conquistadors conquered Peru and the Peruvian people ultimately deserted the city of Machu Picchu. The Spanish never found, and thus did not alter, Machu Picchu. It was rediscovered in 1911 by explorer Hiram Bingham. National Geographic magazine featured Bingham's story and pictures of the sacred city. This publicity has led to ever-increasing tourism in this region of Peru. Over the years, air travel and infrastructure improvements have meant a nearly constant increase in the number of tourist that visit the site each year. This project examines the positive and negative effects of tourism on Machu Picchu and on the surrounding region. The site currently receives approximately 970,979 visitors per year. However, the influence and revenue generated by tourists also have an effect on the Peruvian culture in the surounding region. There is inequality that plagues the people who live in the region. Despite large sums of tourist dollars entering the region, many isolated communities have no access to basic services and live in abject poverty
