Summary
During the final months of their freedom, the Tcihene ("red paint people"), easternmost band of the Chiricahua Apaches, were led by Nana, a remarkable man in his seventies. Stephen H. Lekson, archeologist and historian, describes the final effort of this group to evade capture in Nana Raid: Apache Warfare in Southern New Mexico, 1881. Nana had seen the change in lifestyle for his people from one of complete freedom, moving seasonally over an enormous range, to what Lekson describes as "a shattered band of fugitives with no safe homeland." During two months of 1881, Nana and his small following of warriors traversed more than three thousand mile, fought at least seven major engagements with the cavalry, and attacked at least a dozen ranches and towns. The Apaches were victorious in these fights, taking hundreds of horses and cattle. Two other important Apache leaders, Geronimo and Juh, joined Nana in Mexico, Nana and Geronimo were together in the final campaigns of the Chiricahuas to retain their freedom. Ultimately taken prisoners, the Apaches were sent to Alabama and then to Oklahoma where, still a captive, Nana died in 1869, nearly ninety years old. The Tcihene were never to recover their homeland in southwestern New Mexico -- Back cover
