Summary
It was said of Houston lawyer Harlan Cole that all of his clients were poor and innocent. If they aren't when he gets them, they are when he leaves them. But Cole worked brilliantly for the enormous fees he collected. No client complained, least of all John Heywood because he stood accused of murdering one fo the country's top sports celebrities, Chip O'Neal, coach of the Houston Roustabouts. District Attorney Morgan Shaw said that Heywood tried to bribe O'Neal, then stomped him dead when he threatened to expose him. The coach's body was found in the shadows of the Galleria Complex where a throng waited to honor him. Then a few hours later, the body of O'Neal's secretary, Marla Sinclair, was found in a station wagon already linked to the first slaying. Heywood said he was innocent and Cole believed him. But the District Attorney had forged a chain of circumstantial evidence around Heywood's neck, and Cole knew that to save him he needed to discover and expose the real killer
