Summary
  • John McCanless, a brave old ex-professor of veterinary medicine whose mind has snapped for better or worse, sets out to save his daughter's virtue and his mortgaged ranch in this satirical, poignant tale about a man whose unquenchable thirst for freedom drives him into the role of the outlaw hero, the hunter pursued. With a Mexican wetback as his trail crew, Scandalous John starts out on the long trail north to drive his herd across twentieth-century America. Along the way he encounters hunger and storm, carnal temptation, ruffians and reformers. In the authentic Old West ghost town of Warbag, Colorado, Inc., he is captured and almost done in; but he escapes to find his way through to the cattle market of the world, Chicago, where he meets his fate under the sun. "If you want to go someplace in the world," John had said, "you've got to cut fence now and again. The extent of a man's fences is the extent of his fears, and there's only two kinds of people in the world, the living and the afraid."
  • A modern version of Don Quixote in which a middle-aged professor of veterinary medicine sets out on a trail-drive with one cow and a Mexican wetback for a squire
