Summary
"Sam Duncan, a young man from San Antonio, Texas, has just lost his father as "The Texan" opens. On the day of the funeral the family shop is descended upon by Texas Rangers, re-provisioning frantically as they give chase to a band of marauding Comanche, and Sam is called upon to meet and aid several wounded Rangers who follow. The young man meets the Rangers, all but one dead or dying in the saddle, and feels the inexorable call to join up and leave his empty family home behind. "The Texan" follows Sam Duncan as he journeys from inexperienced Ranger through guerilla fighter in the Civil War, leading men to harass Union forces outside of the sanction of the Army. He leads his men to the battle of Vicksburg, to disastrous results, and later forms unexpected friendships with Elroy Parsons, a young minister's son with an unusual talent, and Frank Fisher, a 'gentleman outlaw' whose love of notoriety is both endearing and tragic. His journey is spellbinding, and the characters that surround him throughout are filled with depth and authenticity and not a small amount of wit. There is Roy Parson, the preacher's son turned gunslinger, Bannon, the despicable and dangerous army sergeant, Pem Phillips, the innocent, unfailingly loyal follower, and Mullins, the street-wise New Orleans river rat, and there is Frank Fisher, gentleman outlaw, good friend, occasional partner and constant amusement. There are Indian fights, gunfights and explosions, drunks and fools and insolent authority, and there is humor and despair and a backdrop that unfolds from Texas, through the battle of Vicksburg, through the Oklahoma territories and the changing West that Sam Duncan loves and hates all at the same time"--From the publisher on Amazon.com
