Summary
Charles Lummis has successfully captured and described the essence of the peoples who inhabit the Southwest. In 1918, ten years before his death, Lummis wrote, "I never write about anything that I don't personally know or haven't exhaustively dug up." The results are illuminating descriptions of the customs, religions, songs, ceremonies, traditions and history. His passages describing the Penitents and their ceremonies are classics. Born and reared in the East, Lummis matriculated at Harvard. In his early twenties he moved to Ohio and then to California. In Los Angeles he established a newspaper and was its city editor for three years. Due to overwork, Lummis was forced to retire and therefore returned to New Mexico where his adventures included living with the Penitents and adoption by the Isleta Indians. It was in this period that he met Adolph Bandelier and traveled with him, exploring the Pueblo world and taking thousands of photographs which are of untold historical value. The Land of Poco Tiempo is the result of this zealous journalist's observations and his insatiable desire to find out why and wherefore -- Book jacket
