After unsuccessfully trying to shoot a squirrel, young Wes walks home through the deserted woods and decides to take a detour past the old cemetery. Once there, he stops by the grave of a girl named Susan who died in 1934. He imagines what she was like and that he was courting her. The gravestone gives no details of how she had died and he mourns for her and all the others who go ungrieved
